Wandering Ikebukuro

Wandering Ikebukuro

As far as I know Ikebukuro is not an area of Tokyo generally associated with jazz. I was told about Kenny’s Bar recently by trumpeter Neil Stalnaker and had a great time at his gig there last week. On Saturday I decided to head back to Ikebukuro for a wander around and was thrilled to find three other jazz joints I had not heard of: Apple Jump live house, Cafe Independent (also a live house), and Swing Talk Pea. I also stopped in at the Paper Moon for the first time in a few years and had a great talk with Yamammoto-san the owner while drinking beer and listening to Eric Dolphy and Roland Kirk. There is no better Saturday evening than that.
