New mix from France by Prezident Markon!
1. Louise Jallu Quartet, 'À Genneviliers': This young devotee of tango and exponent of the bandonéon studied and now teaches at the Gennevilliers music conservatory. Taken from her very promising double album, Francesita, which came out in 2018.
2. Aquarela, 'Assanhado': Virtuoso oboe-player, Jean-Luc 'Oboman' Fillon's trio is enhanced by Brazilian percussionist, Zé Luis Nascimento, on this glorious album of mainly traditional Brazilian choro, A Bela Vida.
3. Kora Jazz Trio, 'Chan Chan', from Part III: A beautiful take on the Cuban classic from this West African trio of Djeli Moussa Diawara on kora, Abdoulayé Diabaté on piano and Moussa Cissoko on percussion.
4. El Comité, 'So What': The title track from Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa's band of young guns is an almost unrecognisable interpretation of the perennial Miles Davis favourite.
5. African Salsa Orchestra, 'Kongo Kandevie': Trombonist, vocalist and bandleader from Benin, Michel Pinheiro, contributes all 10 compositions on the orchestra's delightful self-titled debut album.
6. Diogal, 'Yene': Now based in France, this son of a Senegalese fisherman released his fifth album, Roadside, in 2018: a deceptively simply delight.
7. Magic Malik Orchestra, 'Marthe et Le Jungle': Flautist Malik Mezzadri is one of the brightest young stars on the French jazz scene. This track is taken from 2008's multi-faceted double album, Saoule.
8. Isthme, 'Mirages': And while on the subject of young French jazzers, here's the title track from the Parisian quintet's first album, released earlier this year.
9. United Colors of Méditerranée, 'Egyptian Dream, A Night in Cairo': A homage to 'A Night in Tunisia' taken from the 2018 album, Sirocco, in which Spanish, Middle-Eastern and gypsy influences abound with taste and distinction.
10. Akalé Wubé, 'Bazay': Their eponymous debut album from 2010 revealed this French quintet as the most convincing purveyors of Ethio-jazz outside Ethiopia. Little wonder that the legendary Girma Bèyènè would choose to record with them in 2017.
11. Yapunto!, 'Promesa': This Franco-Colombian 10-piece collective, fronted by
